About the Artist
Mary started painting in the 1970's with no formal training other than an occasional adult education and college course. She worked primarily in oil at that time.
She was fortunate to have a good friend who was a wonderful artist, art teacher and who also became her mentor. She branched out and studied pottery. She purchased a wheel, kiln, and learned the art of glazing. When she felt she was ready, she opened a shop in her home in the evenings. Mary worked by day as a registered nurse and sold her pottery, paintings and weavings at night.
During this period of her life in Iowa, her daughter assisted by doing slab pottery. Together they did many shows.
Mary moved to the Kansas City metro area in 1982. Her new job required weekly traveling and she could no longer do pottery. She continued to paint when she found time.
Mary joined the Olathe Visual Artists and have attended many workshops. She began painting in watercolor and acrylic in the last three years and plans to learn pastels. Mary loves painting flowers, landscapes, water and ocean scenes and has done a lot of portrait work. She has shown at the Hidden Glen Art show each year and in many other metro area locations.
